- Executive Director
Tennessee Concrete Association
Alan grew up working in a family-owned ready mix business. Even before he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management from Mount Vernon Nazarene College, he had cast concrete pipe, septic tanks, and had gained experience in loader operations, truck driving, dispatching and batching concrete.
After college, he moved up the corporate ladder, eventually becoming president of the family business. Along the way, Alan was certified by the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association as a Concrete Technician and as a Concrete Technologist. He also earned certification as an ACI Level 1 Field Testing Technician and Concrete Flatwork Technician. He was also active in the Kentucky Ready Mixed Concrete Association and served as President in 1988-89.
In 1995, Alan joined The Aberdeen Group, merging his experience in the concrete industry with his long-time interest in computers and technology. Alan served as Director of Industry Relations for Aberdeen's Electronic Media Division until January of 1998, when he accepted his current position as Executive Director of the Tennessee Concrete Association (TCA).
Along with his duties at TCA, Alan serves as a director of the CIM Patrons, an industry group dedicated to the support and enrichment of the Concrete Industry Management Degree Program at Middle Tennessee State University, and also serves on the Board and Executive Committee of the North American Concrete Alliance.
Alan has taught parts of the NRMCA Concrete Sales Professional program for California, Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky and Texas. In addition, he is a certified instructor for the ACI Flatwork Finisher program and is certified to teach the NCCER Wheels of Learning Concrete Craft Training. He earned his Master of Business Administration degree in May of 2004 from Jones International University.
In 2004, Alan organized the Count on Concrete Bike Ride Across America and helped raise over $47,000 from the concrete industry to fund grants to local trails projects in six states while highlighting the benefits of concrete, especially pervious concrete, in building environmentally sound projects. Alan was honored to receive one of the prestigious Kodak American Greenways Awards for 2004 for his efforts in making the bike ride a success.
